- Day 2: Beijing (Oct 28th or Nov 6th)
-
Breakfast, Lunch
About Beijing: from a Chinese
perspective, Beijing's prominence as the political and economic
heart of China is just over eight centuries old. Its history is far
more ancient, as the city sits on the site of a frontier trading
town which hosted Mongols and other tribes in about 1000 B.C., and
Paleolithic Man is believed to have populated the area as much as
500,000 years ago. Today, its resident population is at least 12
million.
This morning your Beijing guide will
meet you in the lobby and escort you for a tour of the city's
highlights, beginning with a walk to Tiananmen Square (Gate of
Heavenly Peace), the great central plaza which stands as an ongoing
symbol of central power and the Forbidden City, an immense cluster
of ancient buildings which served as the secretive nerve center of
Chinese Imperial rule through the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
We continue with a visit to the back
streets of Beijing, to its hutongs, the crowded, ancient quarters
where our means of transportation will be by foot and rickshaw.
- Day 3: Beijing: The Great Wall (Oct 29th or Nov 7th)
-
Breakfast, Lunch
|
Over two millennia have passed
since the beginnings of the Great Wall, begun by the Emperor Qin as
a grand gesture of national unification and protective bulwark
against the hordes from outside the Celestial Kingdom. A
magnificent structure built to last forever, it is one of the few
man-made structures visible from space. As the Great Wall is some
distance away from the center of Beijing, your visit there will
take most of the day. Our tour will visit one of the less visited
areas of the wall, where there is excellent access, and the ability
to take pictures without great crowds.

 |
